Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)

“Hey, how y’all doing?” That’s how I like to kick off my episodes—full of energy and a real connection to the journey I’m on. Today, I want to share how my path from meditation to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has shaped my approach to life, growth, and self-defense.

Starting Slow: Meditation and Martial Arts

I always say, start gradually. Just as I wouldn’t jump into an hour-long meditation session without easing in, I don’t throw myself into intense Jiu Jitsu training right out of the gate. I remember how my buddy, Pale Horse, inspired me with his sacred artwork on our favorite hoodie. He even runs guided meditations on Instagram every Tuesday at 8 PM—a perfect way to step into a state of calm before tackling something as demanding as martial arts.

The Art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, for me, is more than just self-defense—it’s a journey. Born from the traditions of Japanese jiu jitsu and transformed by the Gracie family in Brazil, this “soft” martial art teaches me to control an opponent with chokes, arm locks, and strategic positioning instead of relying on brute force. Every training session, every tap, and every gentle reminder (a little slap here or there) has been a lesson in technique and control.

My Journey Through the Belts

I’ve been training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for nearly 10 years now, and my journey through the belts—from the early days as a white belt learning survival techniques to polishing my skills as a near-purple belt—has been humbling and rewarding. I started out as a blue belt with three stripes and, along the way, faced challenges like a nagging quad injury. Each tap out wasn’t a defeat; it was an opportunity to learn what I needed to adjust, whether it was my positioning or my approach to a move.

Safety, Respect, and the Dual Nature of Training

One thing I truly appreciate about modern Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the focus on safety and respect. Gone are the days of reckless rolling that led to injuries. Today, I train in environments where instructors break down each move, ensuring we all practice in a controlled and respectful way. Whether I’m at a school like Yamasaki’s in Rockville or working through a Gracie-approved online curriculum, the emphasis is always on gradual progress and mindful practice.

I also like to point out the balance between training for self-defense and training for competition. Some gyms focus heavily on points and positions, which can sometimes overshadow the self-defense techniques I value so much. In real life, rules can break down—eye pokes, nut shots, and elbows might come into play. That’s why my training always includes an element of self-defense, preparing me for unpredictable situations.

Recovery: Listening to My Body

Training in Jiu Jitsu is as physically demanding as it is mentally challenging. I’ve learned that recovery isn’t optional. From ice baths and massages to stretching and proper hydration, taking care of my body is essential to keep me in the game. Every session teaches me more about my own limitations and the importance of building up my strength gradually, so I don’t just train hard—I train smart.

The Synergy of Martial Arts

My journey doesn’t stop with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I’m also exploring the synergy between Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, and Taekwondo. Each discipline offers something unique. Jiu Jitsu sharpens my grappling and ground game, while the striking arts prepare me for those moments when a punch or kick can make all the difference. Integrating these disciplines has truly unlocked new levels of understanding and capability in my martial arts practice.

Final Thoughts

Every time I step on the mat, whether I’m meditating or rolling, I’m reminded that every tap, every fall, and every moment of calm is a chance to grow. I embrace my journey—safety, respect, recovery, and the constant pursuit of improvement are all part of unlocking my unlimited potential.

So, subscribe, like, and share this journey with a friend. Remember: unlocking your potential starts with that first step—one roll, one meditation, one mindful moment at a time.
